2016-2017 Rules & Expectations

We look forward to the new school year and anticipate success for each and every student. All students and parents should review the following rules and expectations together and sign the Signature Verification Page. These rules and expectations were developed for all students to achieve success in a safe and nurturing learning environment.

AttendanceTop of Page

  • School hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. Be on time and do not leave early. You are welcome to arrive early and stay late.  You may arrive as early as 7:30 a.m. and you may stay on campus, working in a classroom with teacher supervision, as late as 3:00 p.m.  You may not leave before 12:45 p.m. even if you arrive early.   
    • You must attend school a minimum 20 hours per week and are responsible for clocking in and out each day to record your hours.
    • If you are absent, please have a parent/guardian call the attendance line within 24 hours at 760-753-3860.
    • If you are tardy, for any reason, you MUST make up the time, after school, on that same day, with your advisor.  No Exceptions!!  Plan for this.
    • You MUST have permission from your teacher before leaving the classroom for any reason.
    • Pick up your time card from your advisor after 12:45 p.m. NEVER take your time card home.
    • If you need to leave campus for any reason, you MUST have permission from a parent/guardian, and it must be cleared with staff before you leave.
    • Poor attendance or punctuality will jeopardize your enrollment at Sunset.
    • You must attend your assigned classroom each period.  You cannot work in a classroom other than your assigned classroom each period.
    • Students with excessive tardies will be assigned after-school detention.  Failure to attend detention will be considered defiance and will result in disciplinary consequences.

BehaviorTop of Page

  • RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY are the two main guidelines here at Sunset. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
    • Inappropriate language will not be tolerated.
    • Respect teacher’s requests and follow all classroom rules.
    • Tobacco on campus is against school rules and illegal. If you’re caught in possession of tobacco, paraphernalia, or you are smoking, you will be disciplined accordingly.
    • Students may be disciplined for inappropriate behavior to and from school even if the behavior occurs off campus.
    • Sleeping during class time is prohibited.
    • If you drive to school, the student parking lot is located on the east side of the school.  Parking on campus is a privilege. You MUST adhere to all traffic laws to and from school and in the campus parking lot.  Your parking privilege may be revoked for traffic violations.
    • Please help keep our campus and classrooms clean by picking up after yourself.

Cell Phones Top of Page

Phones are to be TURNED OFF and PUT AWAY during school time. They can be used before school, during break or after school only.  They are NOT to be used during class time or passing periods.  If someone needs to contact you, including your parents, they can call the office, and you will be paged. They should NOT call you on your cell phone during class time.

If you are to be found using your cell phone, it will be taken away and you must meet with Mr. Ayala after school before it will be returned to you. If the problem persists, your parent will have to pick up the phone from Mr. Ayala.  

Schoolwork and HomeworkTop of Page


·    Daily class work is expected. Come to school prepared with a plan for the day. Ask your teacher and/or advisor for help with schoolwork. Homework is essential to academic success. Be sure to do some every day.


·     Students will not receive schoolwork for a class if they have an unexcused absence for that class.  For example, if a student is truant for period 1 but attends class during period 2, he/she will not receive work for period 1 until he/she attends period 1. 

CheatingTop of Page

Be Be aware of plagiarism (copying 3 or more words from another source without giving credit). This includes downloading papers from the internet and cutting & pasting.


ChjCheating or plagiarism, of any kind, results in being removed from the class for the rest of the semester with no credit, no matter how much of the course you’ve completed. You will not be allowed to re-enroll in the class until the following semester, and you will start the class from the first unit/chapter. Students who allow others to copy their work or cheat off them will receive the same consequence.

Use of ComputersTop of Page

  • It is a privilege to use them. Do not abuse the privilege or you may lose it.
  • Using a proxy to access a blocked site will result in the loss of computer use for one semester.
  • Computers are for school work only.
  • No e-mailing, use of social media or games are allowed during school hours.

Phone and Copy MachineTop of Page

  • The office phone is to be used only for emergencies. Be sure to ask permission first!
  • Students are not allowed to use the copy machine unless permission is given by Victoria.

CommunicationTop of Page

  • Advisors meet regularly to evaluate your progress.
  • Progress Reports are sent home approximately every six weeks. Teachers comment on effort, attitude, progress, and attendance. If you are not making adequate academic progress, a meeting will be scheduled to review your placement at Sunset.
  • Remember to communicate with your teachers and advisor about what you’re doing and what you plan to do.
  • If you are enrolled in a particular class during a particular period, you are to be in that classroom during that period! You must always follow your assigned class schedule.

  • Principal Conference
  • Parent Conference
  • After-school detention
  • Community Services
  • School Attendance Review Board (SARB)
  • Removal from a class with no credit
  • Arrest
  • Suspension (length may range from 1 day to the remainder of the semester)
  • Expulsion
  • Change of School Placement
  • Referred back to your Boundary School

The following will result in immediate suspension, and may result in a change of school placement. No warnings are necessary.Top of Page

  • Fighting
  • Stealing
  • Graffiti
  • Gang Activity
  • Threats
  • Under the influence or possession of drugs or alcohol
  • Defiance, profanity or inappropriate language directed to a teacher or staff.
